Grammar : the Present Perfect and the Simple Past

Present  Perfect or  Simple Past?

When we talk about the past we have many tenses in English.
The Simple Past Tense: to talk about events that occurred in the past and which are not related to the present.
The Present Perfect: it is used to talk about events that have happened but we do not say when this occurred. This tense has links with the present or it may influence the present.

” I have finished university”, in this sentence we talk about  an event that has finished but  it implies that now I can look for a job and  I am not at university anymore.

” I finished university last year”  has a specific time and it implies that we know that this happened in the past.
